ALOE VERA
Keep a plant in a pot in the kitchen.  It is the best treatment for minor cuts, burns and scalds.  Cut an inch long piece from a leaf, peel back the skin and squeeze the juice onto the affected area.  This will cool the skin and reduce the stinging.  Aloe Vera dries quickly and guards the wound against any airborne bacteria.

Always have a tube of Aloe Vera Gel handy at home.  It can be purchased from your local pharmacists (I know that Lloyds Pharmacy stock it).  Most will stock it for as little as £5.00 - £6.00.

ALUMINIUM FOIL
Wrap your celery in aluminium foil and then place it in the refrigerator.  It will then keep for weeks.

ANAEMIA
High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of haemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anaemia.

ANAGRAMS
To help you solve anagrams, use Scrabble tiles - they are easy to move around.

ANIMALS and ANIMAL HAIRS
1.  If you have to leave your pet alone at home for several hours, turn your radio on at a low volume.  The
sound makes your pet feel less abandoned.
2.  Remove animal hairs from furniture with a damp cloth, or sticky tape.

ANTS
1.  Place ground cloves in the corners of cupboards, or a cut lemon to deter ants.
2.  Sprinkle salt on your shelves to deter ants.
3.  Ants will also retreat from lines of talcum powder, chalk, cayenne pepper and ground cinnamon ... and cover a hole that       you find they are coming in through, with vaseline (petroleum jelly) - the ants won't trek through the vaseline.
4.  Place a saucer of sugared water on their route, they will relay the message of its whereabouts, enjoy the water
     and
usually drown.
5.  Clean your floors and counter tops with a solution of vinegar and water.

APPLE SAUCE
Simmer the apples with some sugar and stir in a knob of butter towards the end of the cooking.  Don't boil and stew the apples in water.

ARTHRITIS and RHEUMATISM
Eat a clove of garlic, or apply garlic oil to affected areas.

ASPARAGUS
1.  To keep asparagus fresh for a day or more, cut a small amount off the bottom of each stalk.
2.  Stand asparagus stalks upright in a container in an inch or so of water.  Cover with a plastic bag and refrigerate.

ASTHMA
Three cloves of garlic, boiled in milk every night, or 1 whole pod peeled and boiled in 120 ml malt or apple vinegar, strained and cooled with honey.

AVOCADOS
  1. Ripen avocados in the microwave by microwaving on LOW for one minute, then turn and microwave again for one minute.  Overheating will blacken the avocado flesh.
  2. Wrap them in dry newspaper or in a brown paper bag, leaving them in dry and warm place. To ripen them quickly, add an apple.
