HANDY HINTS TO SAVE YOU MONEY ...

OATMEAL
  • To remove dead skin cells and stimulate the circulation, mix together 2 tablespoons of sugar, 2 tablespoons of coarse ground oatmeal and a handful of dried herbs - thyme, rosemary, mint, oregano, etc) and rub into damp skin.
  • To use as a face mask, mix honey and oatmeal into a paste and spread evenly on your face, avoiding eyes.  Leave on for about 12 minutes, then rinse off with warm water and apply moisturiser.
ODOURS
1.     To get rid of stale cigarette or cigar smoke, leave a dish of vinegar or ammonia in the room
overnight.  It also helps to dampen a towel with diluted vinegar and wave it through the room.
2.     Carpet odours can be eliminated by sprinkling sodium bicarbonate on the carpet before
vacuuming.  Test a tiny area for colour-fastness before applying to the entire carpet.
3.     To prevent odours from developing in the refrigerator or freezer, put several charcoal
briquettes inside the unit to absorb any smells.
4.     To remove fish smells from hands, rub them with vinegar and water or salt and water.
5.     To banish onion, garlic and bleach smells from your hands, put fingers on the handle of a
stainless-steel spoon.  Run cold water over fingers while rubbing gently.
6.     Mothballs in the rubbish bin will neutralise smells as well as deter insects.
OIL STAINS - on garage floor or driveway
Pour coca cola onto the stains, let it soak in and then rinse.
OLIVE OIL
Do not allow Olive Oil to get too warm.  It will go rancid ... and if too cold, it will go cloudy.
ONIONS
1.     To shed fewer tears when chopping an onion, store the onions in the refrigerator.
2.     To remove onion smells from your hands, put your fingers on the handle of a stainless-steel
spoon.  Run cold water over fingers while rubbing gently.
3.     To remove the smell of paint in the room, place a large cut onion in a pan of cold water to
        absorb the
smell.
ORNAMENTS
When moving house, wrap china, glass and delicate items in damp newspaper.  This will form a protective covering as it dries.
OVENS
Leave a small dish with some ammonia in it in your oven for 24 hours.  You will find that the grease is much easier to remove.
OVERFLOWS
Squeeze some lemon juice or salt into the soapsuds and if using a washing machine, squeeze the juice into the soap powder compartment.
OVERWEIGHT and at work?
Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and chips. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady ... so snack on a banana
