HANDY HINTS TO SAVE YOU MONEY ...

ICE CREAM - BANANA FLAVOURED
When the banana has black/speckled skin, don’t throw it away – peel it, slice it, lay the slices on a tray and freeze for a couple of hours – then mash it.  Makes excellent ice cream and does not need any additives.

INK STAINS
Remove ink stains on clothes by spraying the stain with a strong hairspray.  Wash as normal.

INSECT BITES
Soothe bites by dissolving 2 Alka Seltzer tablets in a glass of water.  Dip a cloth in the solution and place the cloth on the bite for about 15 minutes.

INVISIBLE INK
Make secretive statements by dipping a cotton bud into a lemon.  Write on the paper, then when it is dry, run an iron over the paper and the secrets will be revealed.

IRONING
Place a few drops of perfume or eau de toilette into the water in your steam iron.  This will make the clothes and linen smell summery and fresh.

IVORY
Leave ivory in a sunny place to keep it white.  Leave the piano open to allow the sun to get to the keys.

JELLIES
1.     Brush a little cooking oil over the inside of your jelly mould before pouring in the jelly.  The jelly with turn
        out easily.
2.     Place a jelly-baby in individual jelly moulds before pouring in the jelly.  When turn out each mould will be
        more special.

JEWELLERY
1.     If your gold or silver chain is in a knot, dust it with talcum powder and it will be easier to unsnarl.
2.     To give pearls a greater lustre, wear them often so that they absorb natural skin oils.
3.     Polish silver by rubbing with a damp cloth and bicarbonate of soda.  Rinse and towel dry.
4.     Clean and polish jewellery, put two Alka Seltzer tablets into a glass of water and immerse the jewellery for
        2 minutes.
5.     If your ring is stuck on your finger, don't panic. Drip olive oil around the ring, then massage your finger with
petroleum jelly - or rub soap around the ring and wet it slightly.  Then try to ease it off.

KETCHUP
  • To get ketchup out of a new bottle, insert a drinking straw and push it to the bottom.  Enough air will be admitted to start an even flow.
  • Run the blade of a knife around the inside of the neck, then tip and see the ketchup flow.
  • When you have finished your bottle, add a little water or vinegar and shake, then use the liquid to flavour soups and stews.

KETTLE DESCALING
  • Fill the kettle with half vinegar and half water.  Leave the mixture in the kettle for an hour - you can leave it for longer if you feel the kettle needs it.  After this time pour the mixture out.  If there's still limescale, wipe round with bicarbonate soda and a damp cloth, then rinse the inside of the kettle out several times until the smell of vinegar has vanished.
  • Pour 30g of lemon juice and 500ml of water into the kettle and boil. Once boiled, unplug the kettle and leave it to cool, then pour out the mixture.  If there's still limescale, wipe the inside with bicarbonate soda and a damp cloth.  Rinse the kettle out at least five times with cold water
  • To reduce the amount of limescale in the kettle, try to fill the kettle up through the sprout, if possible. Also, pour out any excess water from the kettle when you have finished using it. You can also purchase a kettle descaler, which is a steel mesh ball that collects limescale when placed in the kettle

KITCHEN ROLLS
Use a magazine holder to store your cling wrap, tin foil, greaseproof paper in.
